North American Adventure

It’s only been about 4 months since our honeymoon adventure, but boy, do I need a holiday!

This time we are heading to Windsor in Canada before crossing the Detroit River and the border into Detroit, then onwards to Chicago. I’m sure a few people are wondering why we are off to Windsor, a city in the province of Ontario, and the southernmost city in Canada; we are off to a football convention (soccer, for those that don’t know what real football is!).

About a year ago, we were told to get a British Airways American Express card which, if you spend a minimum amount, will give you a companion voucher;  this essentially means that someone can travel in the same class as you but will only have to pay the airline taxes. I opted to fly business class, paying with the Avios points I had accumulated and the companion voucher, meaning that we only had to pay the airline taxes….RESULT!

We flew from Edinburgh to Toronto, via London Heathrow. As we were flying business class, we spent most of the time in the Lounge during the layover. The flight was good, albeit nothing like our Emirates business class flight, but we enjoyed champagne, a 3 course lunch and afternoon tea (horrific, I know!).

We arrived in Toronto and flew through immigration, another benefit when you get off the flight before everyone else! I had already purchased the UP Express train ticket to downtown Toronto so we jumped on that, hoping to catch an earlier train to Windsor. The station was crazily busy as the Blue Jays (baseball team) had a game on, but we made it! We were both pretty tired so we slept on the 4 hour journey to our home for the next 4 nights.

It was 9.30pm when we pulled into Windsor station which was no bigger than our flat! We hailed a taxi to our hotel which was only 2 miles away; we stayed in Caesars, a casino hotel on the riverfront overlooking the Detroit River and the Detroit skyline.

As we were shattered, we decided to show face at the “welcome" night of the convention before having an early bed, certainly early by convention standards!
