No more walking , please!
We made it back down the hill, my legs aching from the last few hours and yesterday's escapades.
Our first port of call was St Martins Cathedral as the walking tour guide said it was very beautiful inside. We didn't stay here long but there is an interesting glass walkway on one side of the floor which you can look through and view various skeletons, eek!
Instead of walking around the old town streets, we decided to walk along the city walls which would eventually take us back to the main square.
One of the recommended bars was called Wine Not?, and as I was told to try orange wine, why not?
Yes I know, it sounds odd but its pretty tasty. We spent an hour or so relaxing even with the rain going on and off as we sat out in the square people-watching. The wine and beer were decent but the service not so much, we decided to check out the blue church on our way back to the hotel.
It was a slight detour but the church was absolutely stunning; it kind of feels like it could be in a Disney movie. Unfortunately, we were not able to go in so we sauntered back to the hotel for a shower before heading out for dinner.
We decided to try one of the recommended restaurants which served Slovak food; there were 2 to choose from but we went with the guides favourite. The bar/restaurant is called Slovak Pub and is a hangout for students and tourists alike. It is split into 11 rooms, each representing a different era of Slovak history. We decided to sit outside as it was still pretty warm. We decided to try the Slovak platter for 2 and beer. The food didn't look too filling but we were warned in advance....
I'm very glad we listened. The platter consisted of dumplings with "bryndza" sheep cheese, 5 pirogi with "bryndza" sheep cheese and dumplings with cabbage and bacon. We were beyond stuffed....
The food was delicious but so heavy on the stomach. It was super cheap too, our bill for the food and 1.5 litres of beer was 20 euros. Happy Days!
We decided to walk back to the hotel via Grand Cru Wine Gallery; this was highly recommended on tripadviser so we decided to give it a go. We sat down and waited for the guy to serve us. I had read that the owner makes the experience, we were about to find out. He asked us what we liked, so we started with a couple of different whites from Slovakia; one was fizzy and sweet while the other dry but still quite sweet. He explained a bit about each wine, before pouring whatever he fancied into the glass. There was a menu but he basically told us to ignore that and each wine would be between 3 to 4 euros. After sampling the white, we got something "special" or so he called it. It was a Cabernet Sauvignon Blanc but it was made with the flesh of a red grape; now this was amazing. It was a slight rose coloue and we didn't get a full measure, but we weren't going to complain.
My next choice was a rose, while Iain decided to have a red. Again, there was no measure, but this was certainly what I would describe as a "decent" measure. In the end, we had 5 full measures plus a little extra, the bill was 16 euros! Bargain, we will be back!
We only left as we were planning to cycle to Devin Castle the following day and neither of us can survive a hangover nowadays.
