We started the day off with a leisurely but hearty breakfast, and a little Buck’s Fizz to get us ready for the journey to Dubrovnik. There was still an hour or so before the bus departed, so we took a last stroll around Split, turns out its not just Zagreb that has weird museums, now if only we were here for another day!
Have a google of Froggyland, it looks quite terrifying!
After buying a souvenir or two, we finished packing and checked out of the hotel. At this point, I’m reasonably happy as we waited for the Flixbus to depart, but that happiness began to wain as the delay got longer and longer. In the end, we were delayed 1hour 59 mins, and I’m pretty sure you can only claim a refund after a 2 hour delay! Next time, we are getting a ferry!
Anyway, the journey was pretty good considering I’m not the best at travelling on a bus; at least there were plenty of photo opportunities along the way.
We arrived at the Heritage Villa Nobile slightly later than planned, but in one piece; the last part of the drive to Dubrovnik was not particularly pleasant given the winding roads. We also had to agree a price for a taxi from the bus station to our hotel, uber said 6 EUR but the taxi driver wanted 20; turns out his daughter is studying graphic design at college, looks like we helped to fund that!
Ivana checked us into our room, dedicated to writers of Dubrovnik, it’s another Heritage hotel, but this time boutique with only 8 rooms. Iain was delighted we were on the ground floor as he was going to have to carry my suitcase up another flight of stairs.
I quickly unpacked, and put on long trousers, a hoodie and jacket. It was pretty chilly and there was a wind warning so I was trying to be prepared. We walked to the old town, through Pile Gate, a 2 minute walk from our hotel and set off to find somewhere for food. Now we usually don’t complain too much about prices, but Dubrovnik is expensive. We found a little restaurant called Mamas on a side street and it had an outdoor heater and felt somewhat sheltered from the wind. We ordered burrata to share as a starter and then I had Buzara (prawns and mussels in a tomato sauce with bread for dipping) and Iain had chicken with a blue cheese sauce. By this point, we thought we might as well have a tiramisu each and round the meal up to 100 EUR, we only had one drink each! The food was excellent and so was the service, something I have not been able to say too often this holiday.
After dinner we decided to go for a drink, but it really was so cold that we only managed one before wandering back to the hotel for some much needed heat, and recuperation after travelling most of the day. Tomorrow better be warmer, otherwise I may have to invest in a jumper!
