Strange Museums!
If there is one weird (and wonderful!) thing about Zagreb, it’s the number of very odd museums!
Yesterday was the Museum of Broken Relationships, today, is the Museum of Illusions and the Museum of Hangovers!
We started off the day with a late breakfast; we had missed the hotel one, so wandered to our favourite street and found a quaint little cafe. I had some pancakes which were drowned in maple syrup, and they were delicious. We also had a couple of coffees, the coffee culture is crazy here!
After breakfast, we walked back to the hotel to grab our jackets, it was only 16 degrees and it definitely wasn’t as pleasant as the previous day. The first museum was 15 minutes walk from our hotel and situated on the main shopping street. It was only 12 EUR entry for an adult and there were two floors of fun illusions.
You start by entering through the vortex tunnel, which I can sure you made me feel sick! There were lots of games and other illusions but my favourite was the Hanoi Tower; a mathematical puzzle consisting of three rods and a number of different sized disks. You start with all discs in the middle rod, ordered by size and the aim is to move all discs to another rod, moving only one at a time. We were doing really well, but couldn’t figure out the last one; we had also been hogging the game for about 20 minutes, so thought we better move on!
All in all, it was a fun way to spend an hour or so, and given the weather wasn’t particularly great, it was nice to be inside.
The next stop was the Museum of Hangovers, this was on the other side of main pedestrian are so it took us 20 or so minutes to get to. The entry was 10 EUR but you also got the chance to purchase a beer, if you wanted…..
Of course, we did! The museum is based on a night out and you start in the bar and eventually end up with a hangover. It was lots of fun, and there isn’t too much more to it than that although you do need a torch for part of the exhibit and you have to leave your ID as security!
We handed back our torches, and as we were about to leave, the woman in charge told us we got a free shot of Rakija; now if you haven’t tried it before, I can assure you, you are not missing anything. We took the shot, a plum flavoured one, it was vile!
The Rakija left a horrible taste so we decided we needed a beer to get rid of the taste.
