Our Honeymoon Adventure Begins.....

Monday 21st January 2018

It’s Monday morning and I have just finished packing for our 4 week honeymoon adventure. The tour begins in Laos in a few days time but we have a few flights to catch before then...

The taxi to the airport picked us up at 3pm; we decided to go to the airport early as we were hoping to upgrade to business class as it was a special occasion. We checked in, and sure enough, a lovely upgrade to business class for the two legs to Bangkok. It wasn’t quite as easy as saying “can we have an upgrade” so my advice to anyone is...if you want to fly business class and are willing to pay for it, then do so! We had a few issues because one of the legs, Edinburgh to Dubai was upgraded, but the other leg had been missed and then our ticket was suspended...After a lot of back and forwards with various people, it all got sorted and we headed to the lounge to relax!

We boarded the first flight and received numerous congratulations on our marriage from the Emirates staff; it was lovely. We were sitting just behind first class; apart from more secluded booths and free Dom Perignon, I’m not sure I would pay for a first class ticket! We were given free champagne though; Veuve is reserved for business class passengers...oh, its a hard life! We were also given a food and drinks menu; I had to choose my drink for when we were airborne, then the starter and main course and of course, any drink I wanted with that!

I went for a Bloody Mary, which was served along with mixed nuts; it was served as soon as we were in the air and obviously, I was finished my champagne by then! We were also given Bulgari toiletries, at least I’m going to smell nice after a travelling for a day! After an hour or so, we were served our food. I chose scallops followed by chicken balmoral then a delicious chocolate brownie dessert. I was full and knackered; they added a mattress to my seat and I pressed the buttons to change my seat into a bed....bliss!

After sleeping for a bit, I was woken for breakfast; some fruit, croissant and muffin, served with a mimosa obviously. We had just finished breakfast when the crew came with a beautifully decorated tray with a chocolate dessert and some more champagne, Dom Perignon, which they had brought from first class! They took a photo of us using a Polaroid camera and put it in a little frame which everyone had signed; what a lovely memento for our journey.

On arrival in Dubai, there was a separate business class bus there to meet us; we were the only ones transferring so we had the bus to ourselves. It was all very surreal. The bus dropped us at the terminal and we headed up to the business class lounge in Dubai; its not quite like Edinburgh, there is a whole floor and you can access the gate directly from the lounge. I could get used to this.....

It’s now Tuesday 22nd January....

We waited for an hour or so, had a couple of beers, then headed to the next flight to Bangkok. We were business class again so started the flight with a champagne; we were given our menus to choose food and drink and I decided to watch a film using the noise cancelling headphones. I had another Bloody Mary followed by Tomato and Basil soup and beef tenderloin; unfortunately I was too full and couldn’t manage dessert!

After another 5 hour plus flight, we landed and headed through immigration. As we had travelled business class, we got to “Fast Track” through and our baggage was also through first! We could have used the chauffeur service provided to business class travellers but decided we would just get the hotel shuttle as we were staying at an airport hotel......
