Whisky...Part 6 (I think?)

Today we drive home, but we are making a short happy stop at Dalwhinnie Distillery first.

It's only an hour drive from Inverness, but I've passed this distillery countless times. I'm really looking forward to the tour and tasting, although I won't be drinking the tasters until I get home.

The tour was really good, and it was interesting to see how different this distillery was to the others, particularly because it uses a worm tub, to cool the spirit, which very few Scottish distilleries now use. We finished the tour in the dunnage warehouse where we were allowed to take a taster directly from a cask and bottle it; I was too short, but Iain got to do it.

After the tour we were taken to the tasting room which was laid out with 6 glasses, 5 of which were filled and one which was upside down. There was also a chocolate, from "The Highland Chocolatier," beside each glass. We started with the first 3 whiskies with matching chocolates; unfortunately, I had to eat the chocolate but bottle the whisky for later. The fourth whisky was Lizzies Dram, which she poured for us due to the story around the creation of the whisky. Lizzie, named after Elizabeth Stewart, was one of the first female operators involved in Scottish malt distilling; she is now retired but worked at Dalwhinnie for 30 years and the dram was made in her honour. Being a women in a distillery was obviously a tough job! I bottled the last two drams and ate the chocolate before heading to the gift shop. I obviously bought more chocolate so I could try the whisky and matching chocolate in the evening; its a hard life!

We continued on our way to Edinburgh, via the famous caravan and petrol station made famous by Jeremy Clarkson and the Grand Tour: Lochdown.

It wasn't long until we were on the M90, leaving behind the beauty and calmness of the Highlands and Islands, and ultimately the end of our holiday.

I'm not cooking tonight though so its off to The Bonnington!
