Noodles and Whisky!
September 1st 2017
There is a law in Mongolia which prevents the sale of alcohol on the 1st day of the month...seriously, who thought of that one! Get me the President!
Anyway, we made it to the station with some supplies; noodles, biscuits, crisps, sweets and water! Our driver unpacked the car and Agiimaa helped us carry our belongings to the train. It was a sad goodbye as we really enjoyed our time in Mongolia; we wish we could have had one more day in the city.
We checked into our cabin, a two berth in first class. It is certainly not as glamorous as it sounds. It is literally two long seats, the back pulls down to make your bed and a table. It is certainly not as luxurious as the Chinese train. We have a communal toilet, one for men and one for women; this is at the opposite end of the carriage to the provodnitsa (the attendant who brings us hot water for tea).
We try and unpack all the necessities for the next few days and settle back into our cabin. We haven't had lunch so when the provodnitsa brings us some water, we decide to have some noodles. The plan is then to go to the restaurant car and have a beer or two...
We ask which way the restaurant car is, only to be told there isn't one; we need to wait until we cross the Russian border! Oh well, noodles and whisky it is then; thankfully we still have the majority of the bottle we bought in the airport!
Until then....hiccup!
