Chúc Mùng Nam Moi 2019 - Happy New Year 2019

We sunbathed until 5pm, leaving only to get changed for dinner and in time for cocktail hour! At 6pm, the snacks and cocktails were ready; cosmopolitans with pigs in blankets and mini smoked salmon wraps. We were also told about the plans for tomorrow and as it was technically New Year’s Eve, we were told to look out for all the fireworks from towns along the banks of the river.

At 7pm, we went to dinner. I had ordered caramelised snake fish to keep with the snake trend; this time it was beautiful though! Iain had a steak, but it basically had chilli powder poured all over it, apparently still tasty though! After dinner, we went back up to the sun deck to have a few drinks and celebrate new year! Iain ended up drinking Vietnamese coffee; a bit like an Irish Coffee; served with whisky and ice! I was on the vodka, trying to remain sober as we passed numerous cities. At 10.30pm, we saw an amazing firework display from a city about 20 or so miles away; it went on for at least 15 minutes and was stunning.

As it was Tet (New Year), I decided to change into my Vietnamese traditional dress; given that it was still around 30 degrees, I was roasting. New Year came and went without much fuss, we were really surprised that there wasn’t a coordinated display at midnight but no, it was the quietest part of the night!

A Canadian called Rick, great guy! Not so sure about his marital advice though....

Disappointingly, we finished our drinks and went to bed about 15 minutes after midnight, the Vietnamese fireworks never really materialised. But, we were pretty drunk so it was a fun night anyway!

Oh and I don’t have a Vietnamese keyboard installed, so some of the accents on the heading are missing...feel free to google it! As an aside, two google execs are on board our boat....this is not advertising though!
